What? Is this even possible?

>> Tuesday, September 15, 2009

You've all heard me say a gazillion times how much I love Mint.com. And I do. I absolutely love it, especially the budgeting section and expense tracker. These are by far the tools I use the most.

There's one tool that I never look at- it's the "Net Income" section. Where the "Expense Tracker" section lists each expense and each check individually so you can categorize it, the "Net Income" is just the total by month of all your income less expenses.

Income - Expenses = Net Income

Sounds helpful right?

Well, would someone please tell me how this is possible-

Mint says that since April, we've made $45,116 and we've spent $53,651.

It says that in the past 6 months, we've spent approximately $8,500 OVER what we made.

Since we don't use credit cards, don't use debt, and our debt has even decreased drastically, how exactly can we be spending more than we make? Where is this "spending" going? How's it being covered?

Obviously, it's wrong. We're not spending more than we make. If it were close, I could maybe understand, but it's not even close... it says in 6 months, we spent $8,500 MORE than we made. In other words, Mint.com thinks we spend $1,400 MORE EACH MONTH than we're bringing home and that's just not possible. I don't know if their income number is off or their expense number and frankly, I don't care. I know our spending is in line with our income so I'm not worried about it.

???>

totally bizarre

I've noticed that mint sometimes "double counts" things. I have to go through each month carefully and "exclude" things so that it gives an accurate account of the inflow and outflow of things. I always go through my spending graphs and see which area seems higher than it should- and then check item by item to see what's wrong...just to be sure there isnt' some spending going on that I didn't know about! :)

Mine's the same as yours Kelsa. The only thing I could ever attribute it to was my savings. When I transfter money to my savings mint.com deducts it as if I spent that money. But I didn't. It's not gone, it's just somewhere else. But I didn't think you guys were saving so maybe that's not your issue. I say just go on ignoring it.
