Happy New Year to Us - Our Net Worth

>> Friday, January 1, 2010

Happy New Year everyone!

As if to say "Congratu-fricken-lations"... we got a little surprise this morning!

I logged in to update my net worth and guess what?

The value of our Michigan home dropped another $10,000 in one month.

Happy New Year to us!

Therefore, our net worth for December is -$38,821 (down from -$31,124 in November).

A net change of $7,500 (loss).  Luckily, adding to our emergency fund and retirement helped make up the difference or we would have lost a lot more.

It's just an estimate and I like to think we could get more for a 2,100 sq.ft. and 4 bedroom home than $76K but there's no way to know right now. So on paper, it looks like crap and there's not much we can do about it.

On a much cooler, happier note, Michael's Aunt Sheri (who we love!) gave us an electric scooter just because! It was given to her a few years back and just been sitting in her garage. It requires some maintenance, probably a tune-up of some kind. It says it's not holding a charge and the front headlight doesn't work. I've increased our "car repair" budget for January from $100 to $400 to accomodate the tune up. I'm so excited to have it and think it's super cute!

Plus, spending some money on this cute ride could delay our 2nd car purchase for quite a while.

Here's a picture of me taking it for a spin- I look like crap. I just woke up and Michael wouldn't even let me change before taking it for a spin!

Happy New Year!

I love the scooter- how cool! You look fine- but shouldn't you be wearing a helmet?? Tsk Tsk! :P

Have a great weekend!

Hey, my kids got scooters too! Okay, they were the little kid-powered Razors, but still. You guys could form a club or something.

Happy new year, darlin'!

haha- yes, a helmet is necessary for future rides! We live on a cul-de-sac though and I was just going up and down our little side street. I wasn't really going anywhere but in small circles!

Longtime lurker here. Love the financial talk on your blog. Just curious - where are you getting the monthly home value estimates?

Oh man I'm so jealous. I want a vespa so bad. Your scooter is super cute.

Sorry to hear about taking a financial loss on something that is completely out of your hands. Hopefully at some point your home's value will pick back up, or at the very least stop loosing value.

Cool scooter! Sucks about the house, but really, real estate estimates are kinda tricky since they simply projections. The only way to know the home's true value is to put it on the market, and until you have to do that, it's a moot point in my opinion.

As said by Will Smith in "MIB"...

"I make this look good."

You're totally rockin the scooter! How fun!

Bummer about the house, dudette!
