Another quick workout

>> Monday, March 30, 2009

Once a year, our department goes to a spring training baseball game. We usually order lunch and then head to the game afterwards. It's a nice break from the daily grind of the business/accounting department.

It was actually really hot today... not bad at first, but there was absolutely no breeze, so as you sat there, you just baked in the sun. For the most part though, it was a good time.

I probably would have had more fun if I didn't have a race this coming weekend b/c I would have let myself get sloshed with everyone else! Or, I would have had a couple of beers at least. Instead, I stuck with the water and had a small lemonade halfway through.

We got back to the office around 4 pm, but no one stuck around. I quickly changed and headed to the gym where I did "Nicole":
as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes-
400 meter run (1/4 mile)
max out on pull-ups

I ended up doing 6 rounds total, but finished with over a minute left... each round was taking approx. 3 minutes, so it didn't make sense for me to try and squeeze another one in. That's the only reason I don't like the "as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes" type of workout.

Anyway, so I did 6 rounds and the first 4 sprints were done at 8.5 mph but the last two rounds, I stepped it up a notch to 9.0 mph (6:40/mile pace). For the pull-ups, I did them on a level 10 assist and I ended up doing 7 each round. Next time I do this, I'm going to shoot for a lot less assistance and lower reps (but harder) each round.

Now I plan to take it easy the rest of the week... after all, I do have a half-marathon on Saturday!

My goal for the race is to come in under 2 hours, which means I have to maintain a pace of 9:10/mile or better. Umm... yeah... that's going to suck. I honestly have no idea if that pace is even possible for me for that distance. My 5K PR is an 8:30/mile pace so I'm only slowing it down a little bit but planning to keep it for 2 hours?

Let's just say that if I end up posting that my time was less than 2 hours, I'll be SHOCKED! I'm going to try my HARDEST and give it EVERYTHING I've got... but man, it's going to be a killer.

Ooooh, guess what else?

Michael comes home TOMORROW (Tuesday)!!! YAY!! He's been gone for almost 5 weeks and I can't wait to see him. His flight comes in at 3:30, so I'm working the morning and taking the afternoon off. I can't wait to wrap my arms around him. The weekend away to Lake Havasu in just a few days is perfect timing!!!

Maxing out

Headed to the gym on Sunday, although I really didn't want to.

So, that right there feels like an accomplishment! And I didn't even have Michael there to encourage me to go... I just did it on my own.

I ran an easy two miles in about 20 minutes- nothing strenuous, just a quick warm-up run really.

Then I did squats-
I did 5 rounds total with 3 reps in each round. Here's my weight:
135
145
155
160
165

Really, the hardest part with the squats isn't in my legs- it's in holding up the bar on my shoulders.

From there I tried maxing out on pull-ups. I did 3 rounds at each level:
3 x 1 rep at level 5
3 x 2 reps at level 6
3 x 3 reps at level 7

Ta-ta for now... (Haven't said that since 7th grade)

Good idea or completely crazy?

>> Saturday, March 28, 2009

Well, we'll soon find out.

I posted an ad on Craigslist tonight to offer my services as a dog rollerblader!!

You gotta laugh at that right?

See, I take my dog rollerblading all of the time, probably 5 nights a week. She loves it and it's a good workout for both of us. She usually comes home and just crashes after one of our excursions.

I figured, the weather is gorgeous in Arizona... I love doing this, my dog loves it, maybe other people would like it too. And maybe I could earn some extra cash at the same time.

It's one of those things that runners should consider- I mean, you go and run a few miles every day... what if you had a furry friend with you that just so happened to belong to someone else?? And they paid you for it? You'd be getting paid to run! It can't get much better than that right?

It's just an idea. I posted the ad and who knows, maybe I won't have anyone interested, but it doesn't hurt to post it right?

I updated the debt payoff goal on the right AGAIN! I sent in a payment for $2,500 to my student loans that increased my total payoff to 61%! One of my student loans now has a balance less than $2,000 so it should be paid off in April! That means I'll have two student loans left, but they both have a balance over $10,000 so it will be take a little while to beat away at them.

Keep ya posted!

Payoff update

I updated my debt payoff goal on the sidebar to 57% of our goal!

It would have been higher but we had some unexpected expenses this month- $800 for repairs to our water softener at our Michigan home and $900 for insurance on the same home.

That's $1700 that could/should have gone to pay off our debt, but instead, had to go elsewhere.

Oh well, we were able to pay for those expenses without breaking the bank and a year ago, I'm not sure I could have said that. We have a handle on our money now like we never did before and it feels incredible.

Not sure if we'll be able to reach our 100% payoff goal by the end of this year, but I'm still going to try. Because even if it's not by December 31st, I want it to be as close after that as possible.

Speaking of goals- I have a half marathon in ONE WEEK! At this time next week, I'll be done with the race.

It's in Lake Havasu and we're planning to spend the entire weekend there- it's perfect timing b/c Michael gets back from tour on Tuesday and we leave on Friday for a long weekend away together.

My goal for the half marathon is 2 hours- which is a 9:10/mile pace or faster. Honestly, I have NO IDEA if I can do that pace for that long or not... If I am able to pull it off, it's going to be TOUGH.

Until tomorrow,

Not slowing down...

>> Thursday, March 26, 2009

In fact, I'm getting faster.

It's crazy to me.

A few years ago, I ran my first 5K since I started this health kick that has seemed to stick with me. My time was 36 minutes or a 12:00/mile pace. And I remember it being HARD AS HELL!

Now, my PR for a 5K is 26 minutes! That's a huge improvement!

Tonight, my workout called for 4 rounds of 1/2 mile sprints. You could rest as long as you wanted between each round, and I ended using 3 minutes after each one.

Guess how fast I ran each 1/2 mile???

Guess... (except for you Amy because I already texted you, your guess doesn't count...)

3:40!!!

...

3:40!!!
(had to type it again for impact)
Holy crap right? That's a 7:20/mile pace! Yowsa! And I kept it up through all four rounds, but it was hard!

I can't really find any recent stats from running 1/2 mile sprints... but I did find one from three months ago where I ran 1/2 mile sprints in 4:20, so I've taken 40 seconds off!

On a side note- to one of my most favoritist (shut up) people EVER- Amy- GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND!!! You're going to do awesome during your race and your training is going to pay off. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Until tomorrow,

Kelsa Killed Kelly

>> Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Kelly was the name of the workout I did tonight... I did it once before. You can read about it by using the labels on the right- "Kelly" or "wallballs".

Kelly calls for 5 rounds of:

1/4 mile sprint
15 box jumps (2ft)
15 wall balls

I did the sprints at 8.5 on the treadmill, which is a 7:03/mile pace.

My total time for all FIVE rounds of the above????

17 minutes 25 seconds!!!

I was cruising! And I even had to run about 25 feet from the treadmill to the box jump area, then another 25 feet from there to the wall ball area, then 50 feet from there back to the treadmill.

The last time I did this workout was on February 1st- or 52 days ago and my time was 21 minutes! So, I took more than 3 minutes off my time! Hells yeah!

When I finished, I was drenched- head to toe covered in sweat. It felt good though.

Then I had to bike home.

Oops. Ha ha, I'm still working on the biking thing AFTER a workout. It's a toughy!

So far, though, I have to say that biking to work is one of my new favorite things. I download music to my MP3 player and just enjoy the ride in. The weather is absolutely, positively PERFECT right now. It's cool when I first start out, but once I get going, I'm comfortable. The sun is out but it's not a killer in the morning or the evening when I leave. The best part about it is the planning... I have to pack a lunch, pack clothes, prepare my entire day and plan accordingly and I LOVE IT. It takes the agony out of the day b/c the decision has been made the night before usually. I know it sounds weird, but biking is actually a much less stressful option, which is a result I didn't anticipate.

Until tomorrow,

Another quick workout, another quick entry

>> Sunday, March 22, 2009

Well, after a day of being lazy and doing a whole lot of nothing, I finally found the motivation to get my butt to the gym.

I ended up doing a CrossFit workout that called for the following:

15 deadlifts
1/2 mile run
12 deadlifts
1/2 mile run
9 deadlifts
1/2 mile run

I did the deadlifts holding a 110-lb bar.

My total time for all of the above?

17 minutes and 21 seconds!!

Hell yeah! I did 36 deadlifts with 110 lbs and ran 1.5 miles in just over 17 minutes! I am pretty proud of that time!

I also swept and mopped the downstairs floor in our condo which is all tile. Our cat Jo-Jo's favorite toys aren't the kind you can buy from a store- hers include candy wrappers, my hair clips, and golf balls.

I moved the couch to sweep and mop behind it and underneath I found the following:
11 candy wrappers
4 hair clips
3 golf balls

I guess Jo-Jo hasn't learned her lesson that when she bats these items under the couch, she can't get them back.

Pets... ya gotta love 'em.

Quick run/ quick post

>> Saturday, March 21, 2009

I only have a minute, but I just got back from a run and I thought I'd blog about it.

Nothing major- it was quick, but tough.

90 seconds all out sprint
90 second rest
6 times

It was tough, but fun. Like always, it's really hard to find an excuse why you can't push yourself when it's only 90 seconds, so I usually do a good job with the "all out sprint" part. But man, that 90 second rest can't come fast enough!

In all, I ran 1.8 miles between the sprints and slow walking during the rests. I feel good about that b/c I'm sure I didn't cover much ground during the walk breaks. Once I have time, I'll download the workout from my Garmin and be able to tell how far I went during the 9 minutes of sprints versus 9 minutes of rest.

The best part- no calf cramps! Wahoo! I never know these days so I'm happy when they don't bother me.

rough night

>> Friday, March 20, 2009

Last night was a rough night...

before I went to bed, I iced both my calves and they were feeling pretty good.

But in the middle of the night, I woke up with one of the worst calf cramps EV-ER! It was terrible. I totally scared my dog half to death b/c I jumped up and sat on the floor and just tried to stretch it. The whole time, I'm made funny noises like, "oh" and "ah" and my teeth were clenched. My poor dog didn't know what to think.

I'm panicking about my calves and the upcoming half-marathon.

You can't really tell, but I updated the debt payoff sidebar! It moved from 51% to 54% but like I said, you can't really tell. I paid $2,000 last week to one of my student loans and it showed up today. Once our tenants pay their rent for the month of April, I'll be sending more money to the debt...

"Murph" round ... umm... 3 ?

>> Thursday, March 19, 2009

I did this same workout back in August, and then I did it a second time on January 2nd.

You can read about both workouts here.

"Murph" is the name of the workout and it has to be one of my favorites... it will NEVER be easy and it's one of the longer CrossFit workouts.

"Murph" calls for a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and then follow it up with a 1 mile run.

The first time I did it in 50:43.
The second time I did it in 37:41.
Tonight I did it in 43:40.

What???? I got slower???

Well, technically, yes, but I made the workout more challenging by doing the pull-ups on level 15 instead of 16 and I did 50 of the 200 push-ups regular instead of all modified. The very first time I did "Murph", I couldn't even do all modified push-ups... I had to do some leaning on a bar b/c I couldn't do all 200 push-ups even modified.

So, yes, I got slower, but I figured that would happen since I was making it more challenging.

I ran the first mile in 8:00 flat. I ran the second mile in 9:00 flat. That last mile was tough because after 300 squats, your legs really don't want to run a mile... at least mine didn't.

Unfortunately, I also started getting calf cramps again. I'm going to ice them tonight, and I'm even considering going to get another massage in just my legs. The half marathon is coming up, and I'm getting nervous that my calves won't cooperate. It's just discouraging.

The funniest part to me about tonight was that after running two miles in 17:00 and doing 300 squats, I had to bike home.

hahahah. That was loads of fun. : )

Hump Day

>> Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Maybe it's because it's hump day that I'm so cranky.

I'm not sure. There's nothing really wrong that I can put my finger on, so I'm trying to convince myself to change my attitude. I'm just easily annoyed by things around me today- both at work and at home.

I think I need to take my own advice and read the description of this blug and just SUCK IT UP!

We'll see...

I biked to work this morning and it was successful... nothing went majorly wrong. The only problem I faced was that my eyes watered really bad, causing my contacts to act funny and my eyes to get blurry. I just need to wear different sunglasses that doesn't allow wind or air to hit my eyes. Not really a problem- just annoying.

I also need to figure out which route is easiest for me to take. Either way, I have to cross a busy intersection no matter which way I come, but maybe one direction will be easier or faster than the other.

I also realize that I will be a pony tail girl at work b/c it's too annoying not having my hair up when I bike.

Tonight, I'm meeting my friend Yvonne for sushi and I cannot wait! It's been a long time since I've had sushi and I'm looking forward to female conversation with someone other than my sister-in-law.

Until tomorrow,

Monday Funday

>> Monday, March 16, 2009

Okay, today wasn't exactly a fun day, but it was just a typical day in the life of an 8-to-fiver.

I had a pretty good workout after work today. I hate Mondays at the gym- it's packed! CrossFit workouts are usually pretty crazy in that you're constantly moving between different machines. And since these workouts are typically timed, I hate waiting for someone to get off a machine that I was just on a second prior. I don't blame them, it's just the way it works, but it makes CrossFit workouts difficult.

I ended up running into one of Michael's clients who I also work with during the day. Since Michael's been gone, she's been telling me how she hasn't been working out and yada, yada. So, I offered to workout with her and push her a little. We ended up doing a workout I've done before, but I didn't time myself because I would wait and cheer her on in between sets.

3 rounds of:
25 kettlebell swings
25 back extensions (on ball)
25 knees to chest on captain's chair
25 sit ups on incline bench

It was tough, just not as much of a cardio workout as I'm used to since we took our time. She did awesome though and I could tell she was really pushing herself.

From there, I jumped on the treadmill and did my normal hill run-
12% incline
20 seconds, 10 seconds off- 8 times
6.7 mph

Last time, I did this workout at 6.6 on the thrill mill so I increased my speed just a tad. It was tough, but fun as usual. It's a super intense workout, but it's easy to push yourself through it since each round is only 20 seconds long--- it's difficult to make excuses for 20 seconds so I just suffer through it!

Unfortunately, my calf was bothering me again tonight so my wishful thinking from yesterday was short-lived. I'm going to roll it out tonight b/c that's really the only thing I know to do.

Another update is that tomorrow I'm taking a lot of my clothes to work!!! What does this mean? It means on Wednesday, I'll be biking to work! I'm soooo excited!! I decided to just give it a shot now and see how it goes. I have two weeks until Michael returns so I'm going to try it out for that time until I absolutely won't have a car or the option.

Now I'm at home and just relaxing, getting ready to take my pup for a walk.

Until tomorrow,
Kelsalynn

Weekend

>> Sunday, March 15, 2009

I had a great weekend- I laid out in the sun by the pool for over an hour yesterday and today.

Glorious. I might actually start looking like I live in Arizona...

I headed out for a run today at about 1:00 PM. I ran 5 miles in 52 minutes, which worked out to be about 10:24/mile pace.

I planned on going further but it was just too hot. I filled 4 containers- 2 with Powerade and 2 with water but I ended up drinking all of it in only 5 miles.

Weatherbug said it was only 75 degrees outside, but I'm calling "bull shit" on that.

It was super hot- especially because there was no breeze and the sun was doing it's thing...

The good thing- no calf cramps!!! wahoo! I got a massage a week ago now and I went the whole week without a calf cramp. I'm hoping it cured me. It's not to say that my calves weren't tight while I was running, but they didn't cramp up so I'm hopeful.

I have a half marathon sneaking up on me very quickly so I better kick it into high gear...

Until tomorrow,

Good workout

>> Thursday, March 12, 2009

It was a crazy day at work, but a good day. Fun meetings, lots of work accomplished, even better conversation... you know the day.

Each employee at my company is given annual "projects" that they must complete. They have due dates throughout the year and they're called "SMART goals." Everyone has different goals and I have a pretty big one due at the end of March. I decided to stay late to work on it. I've tried working on it all month, but I get interrupted a gazillion times and I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere. I got more done in two hours tonight after everyone left than I had all month with all of my employees there.

I've been analyzing information and data since December 1st and it's finally done! It feels great to work on something for that long and have a sense of accomplishment at the end. And even better, I was able to identify some inappropriate practices occuring in December, change them in January, then report on the results during February.

I prepared my report and sent it over to my boss for his review. After I sent it, I felt confident turning my computer and office lights off and saying "done for the night." I really had accomplished quite a bit and it felt great.

Then I walked over to the gym.

I ran two 3/4-mile segments at a 7% incline. I ran at 5 mph, which isn't that fast, but a 7% incline is fricken tough. It wasn't easy, I can assure you. Then, I decided to max-out (kind of) on pull-ups to try and get a little closer to my resolution of doing one pull-up without assistance. I did 2 rounds (1 rep each) at level 5 assist. That's the first time I've done one at level 5, I think, so I'm feeling good about my progress. Then I did two rounds (2 reps each) at level 6 and two rounds (3 reps each) at level 7.

All in all, a wonderful day! I hope yours was too!

Productivity

>> Sunday, March 8, 2009

Man, I'm a lot more productive when Michael is gone! lol

I'm sure he won't like to read that, but it's true. I don't like being bored b/c I realize he's not here, so I try to keep busy. There's also something to do with being the only one responsible for the house that makes me feel more motivated to do it. Terrible, I know...

Today, I went to the bank, took Nikki to the dog park, and went to the gas station all before 10:00 AM. I even took time to make a Zone breakfast...

Since then, I've washed my car inside and out (it looks good!), vacuumed the upstairs and downstairs, made my grocery list and meal plan for the week, changed the sheets on the bed and washed them, and researched auto repair facilities.

It's only 3:00 PM! Now, I'm chilaxing for a bit to hydrate for a run later. What a great day.

Yesterday I went and looked at some cars. They were all a bust. Not only that, but I realized how uncomfortable I feel making this decision alone. I don't know a damn thing about cars and since we're not buying a brand new one, I don't know how to tell if I'm being scammed or not.

So, I made a decision and I have to admit, I'm pretty excited about it.

When Michael returns from tour to start his other new job, I'm going to give him my Alero and I'm going to bike to work. Yup, I'm going to be a bike-commuter! Super exciting huh?

I've always wanted to do this, especially since I work 2 miles from home. The problem has been that I wear a suit and high heels every day and to bike in that attire would suck.

I decided to buy some 3M hooks for the back of my office door and I'm going to hand my suits there where no one will see them. I'm also going to put all of my work heels in a drawer in my desk that is currently not being used. That way, all I need to pack each day is a dress shirt and maybe nylons. I'll have to keep deoderant and some body spray or perfume at work too, and I'll probably end up wearing a pony tail every day, but I'm okay with that. I'm actually pretty excited!!

This way, Michael can use my car and TOGETHER we can shop and buy another vehicle. I would say we would just stick to only having one car, but unfortunately, unless you're completely crazy, you can't bike even 2 miles to and from work in Arizona in the summer when it's 120 degrees. It's just not smart.

Now the rest of the day, all I have to do is go grocery shopping, run to Kohl's to do an exchange, run to Target to pick up a gift card for my boss, and go for a jog...

AWESOME WEEKEND! I hope yours was too...

***Update*** I went for a 3-miler tonight w/ Jill and Nikki- 29:16. The weather is GOR-GEOUS tonight and the sun set was beautiful.

I hate being a landlord

>> Saturday, March 7, 2009

Well, our new tenants called last week and said the water softener wasn't working.

I called a few places and someone came out to look at it today. The estimate to repair it?

$2,200

Argh.

I seriously hate owning a home. I'm not lying. It'd be different, I think, if we lived there and got to enjoy it, but we don't. We keep throwing money at it and never get to see or experience the results.

And, in nearly the same breath as I tell you about a $2,200 expense to repair that (if we decide to do it), I'm going to tell you that I'm off to look at a car right now to possibly buy.

It's nothing special. We'll see how it goes.

So much for that bar to the right of my screen moving anytime soon. Thank God Michael got a new job so we can start tackling that once he gets back.

I plan to workout later today so I'll probably update this tonight.

**Update** Okay, so the car was a bust. That's okay, I'm thinking now of not buying one for a little while. I know, I go back and forth so thanks for coming along for the ride. I would just prefer it Michael was here to make this decision with me.

I went and laid out at the pool for a little while and even fell asleep. I came home and scheduled a massage for 6 pm. I can't wait! I'm going to have her massage my calves really well- after all, I have a half-marathon in less than a month and currently, I can't run 3 miles without getting calf cramps. No good.

Peace out.

Turn around

>> Tuesday, March 3, 2009

If you recall, last month, our car got wrecked, our tenants moved out of the house, we got new tenants moved in, we flew home, and Michael accepted a temporary job with Harlem Globetrotters.

Well, March is turning out to be a whirlwind as well!

MICHAEL GOT A NEW JOB TODAY!!!

Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking... didn't he just take a job with the globetrotters.

Yes.

But it's just for their East Coast tour which ends on March 31st. The same day that Michael interviewed for that job, he also interviewed for another, more stable, full-time gig at a physical therapy clinic.

When he went back for his 2nd interview at the clinic, he had already been offered and accepted the globetrotters gig so he informed them that his start day would be when he returned from tour. They didn't seem too excited, they really want someone who can start next week.

Because of that, we were worried they would choose someone else.

But, we were happily wrong. They called and offered him the job today!!! They even offered him a sign-on bonus if he would start next week but no amount of money would lead Michael to back out of a commitment and I respect him for that.

So he's going to finish the tour and start at the clinic the next day.

It's about 15 miles away in Gilbert, AZ so I guess the wait to buy a new car is now over.

We don't have to rush necessarily, but Michael will need one when he returns so it looks like I know how I'm spending my weekends!!! =) We're still planning to buy a used car...

I had an awesome workout tonight. I kind of made it up once I started. I was torn between running and doing CrossFit so I did a little of both.

I ran 1 mile at 10:45/mile
then I did: 2 rounds of: 10 pull-ups, 20 push-ups, 30 sit-ups, 40 squats
I ran 1 mile at 9:45/mile
then I did 2 rounds of strengthening again
I ran 1 mile at 8:45/mile

I didn't time myself during the strengthening sections, but I kept my heart rate up and kept moving along. It was great.

Until tomorrow,

Helen oh Helen #3

>> Monday, March 2, 2009

First, I did the CF workout "Helen" on August 23rd and I did it in 13:47.

Second, I did "Helen" on November 17th and I did it in 11:23.

Well today, I did "Helen" for a third time and I did it in 10:55!

"Helen" is 3 rounds of a 1/4 mile sprint, 21 kettlebell swings, and 12 assisted pull-ups (level 13).

I started to do a CFE workout after the above which consisted of 2 minute sprints, 1 minute off for 6 rounds but I only made it through 3 rounds. The culprit? Fricken calf cramps yet again. It started on round 2 in my right calf and I let it go and stretched in the 1 minute rest following. It wasn't enough apparently because in the 3rd round it got too bad to keep on trucking along so I just stopped. I finished by stretching for a good 15 minutes.

Revised resolutions

>> Sunday, March 1, 2009

The last few days, I've been thinking about our New Year's resolution to pay off $25,000 of debt. For the first two months of 2009, it seemed like the perfect goal- it was going to be difficult, but we were keeping a good pace and getting creative with finding money to throw at the debt.

With the car now considered a total loss, our car loan is completely paid off and since we don't plan to replace it with any new debt, I consider it debt reduced.

With our car loan now $0, our current debt REDUCTION for 2009 totals $25,768.95.

As of March 1st, our debt has been reduced $25,768.95!!! I like typing that. It feels good. Our financial position is 25-thousand-dollars LESS RISKY than it was just a few short months ago.

But, it's not over yet. I still have my student loans left to payoff. And since I've already reached my $25,000 goal for the year, I need to change the resolution.

I decided to up the anty. It's going to be difficult. In fact, it's damn near impossible, but I'm shooting for the moon on this one and we'll see where I land.

New resolution- be DEBT FREE by the end of 2009.

Here's the details:
In September of 2008, we had (large gulp) $60,952.75 in debt- mostly student loans but also our new car.

Today, March 1st 2009, we have (slightly smaller gulp) $29,901.93.

It's still a lot of debt, but guess what? It's only been 6 months and our debt has been reduced by 51%- that's more than half!!!

That means that in order for us to reach our new goal by the end of this year, we have to pay almost $3,000 per month. ha ha. That's almost so insane that it makes me laugh. Like I said, it's probably impossible, but I'm sure as hell going to try!!!

I've updated by debt payoff ticker on my blog to account for the new figures and the new goal.

Wish me luck.
