It's happened.

We're debt free.

(Excuse me while I clear my throat...)

Wow.

Pride. I feel immense pride. We fricken did it!

When we started this journey, we had $60,952 in debt and our monthly payments were $790. Looking back, I can honestly say it all started in September 2008- my husband hated his job. He was doing the job search thing, but nothing was panning out. He had an opportunity to start doing personal training, but it was risky- if he didn’t find clients, he wouldn’t get paid. He’d start Day 1 of this job without having a clue how much he’d make. He would go from making $45K per year to who knows what, but he would be happier. This was the first time in my life, I felt like our debt was running our life, controlling our decisions. How could we possibly go to one income when we have these payments to make each month? Here my husband was truly unhappy and I felt like our hands were tied… it was the worst feeling.

That’s when I realized something had to change. I made a budget. Mind you, I’m a numbers gal so before this point, if you asked me if I had a budget, I would have said “yes!” but what I had was not a budget…not like I know now.

I made a budget. The next day, Michael quit his crappy job. We were going to make it work- we had a plan.

That was September. We had 8 debts in all.
In December, as Michael's new job steadied itself, we paid off our 1st debt!
In January, full payments were made to debts 2 and 3!
In February, our car was totaled in an accident. Our loan was gone and we did not replace it. We became a one car household, something I swore we could never do.
In March, we paid off our 5th debt.
In May, we paid off debt #6.
In July, we said good-bye to debt # 7.
Finally, today, we paid off our final debt- lucky #8!

Brad, the awesome dude behind the awesome words on this awesome blog, recently became debt free as well. As part of his debt free post, he interviewed himself. I hope he doesn't mind, but I'm totally stealing his idea.

How does becoming debt free actually feel? Does it feel better than you imagined it would?

I let out a huge sigh. I mean, a HHHHUUUUGGGGEEEE sigh. I feel like so much weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Then a sly little smile creeped up on my face...

What were some of the struggles that you had to deal with along the way? Was there ever a time where you almost gave up?

I can honestly say no, we never almost gave up. We were going to become debt free, the only question was how quickly.

What would you consider to be the most important key to becoming debt free? What helped you the most?

Communication and discipline. I used to say that Michael and I were a good team because I did the numbers stuff and he did the health stuff … now I realize we’re a good team because WE’RE GREAT TOGETHER. We’re a good team because we support each other and we communicate.

It seems a lot of people have bought into the idea that debt is essential in order to prosper, what do you have to say to those people?

Wow. I thought so too. All I can say is that my entire perspective changed when I started SAVING to buy something versus PAYING for something I just bought on financing. Debt, to me, is a crutch… not something to be “leveraged” like everyone says.

What was the biggest sacrifice you would say you made in order to become debt free? What about you changed the most?

It’s funny… I’d say the biggest sacrifice was not buying a 2nd car after the accident and starting to bike to work. But now that it’s been that way for a while, I love it and don’t see it as a sacrifice at all.

The biggest change in me is my appreciation for what I have and how little I care now what people think. I had no idea how badly I suffered from “stuffitis”… if I wanted something, I’d go buy it. There was no such thing as “delayed gratification” with me. I did not save for something before running out and buying it, so I really did not appreciate what I had. When my behavior changed, my whole perspective changed. If I wanted something, it had to be budgeted and since we budget BEFORE the month begins, if it’s the 5th, I may have to wait 25 days… might not seem like a big deal, but it really made a big difference. I stopped trying to keep up with the Jones’ and I genuinely value the possessions I have.

Did your friends and family give you a hard time about your new mission to eliminate the debt from your life? If so how did you deal with it? Did I have skeptical friends? Do I think I inspired others by my journey?

It may be weird, but I didn’t tell my family about it. They don’t get it. They never will. I was even selective about which friends I told. Money is very personal. I didn’t want to sound preachy and part of this was selfish too. I didn’t want to tell anyone who wouldn’t be supportive. I didn’t need that.

I know I’ve heard from a few really good friends who have been inspired. Maybe not to the extreme that we were this past year, but even if I encouraged someone to look deeper into their financial situation or ask some tough questions, that’s a good thing.

What is next for you? What financial goals do you plan to accomplish? Our next step in this financial journey is to establish an emergency fund. 3 months to start, then we’ll go from there. From here on out, we pay ourselves first. I can’t wait!

Thanks for all the support from my blog readers... honestly, in so many ways, you know more about me than my own family. This was a personal journey that you supported me through and I really appreciate it.

Deadlift

From Daniel to deadlifts. Boy, two tough workouts in a row. Today's may not seem tough, but it is-
7 x 1 rep of deadlift

Just 7 deadlifts!!! that's it!!! Sounds easy right?

Not just any deadlifts- your one rep max. I have to say that today's workout is more mental than physical.

175
185
190
195
200
205
210

The last time I did 210 I faulted (didn't get it up) so I'm proud to say my 1-rep max has increased by 5 pounds! Bomb-diggity! It was tough though.

Guess what else is bomb-diggity?

TOMORROW WE WILL BE DEBT FREE!!!

It will be weird. Some people say it's anticlimactic, which is sort of what I'm expecting- I mean, my day won't really change- wake up, workout, go to work, submit last debt payment ever, work all day, go home, make dinner, clean the house, watch my shows, go to bed.

It's not like people at work have any idea that I've been paying down our debts this entire year... I can't really scream when it happens. I guess I will submit the payment and that's it.

There are some friends I will probably call (Lexi and Amy, FYI, I'm talking about you here) because I know they'll be just as excited for me as I am, but then the day must go on, same as usual.

Onward to better things- the emergency fund... our first step of paying ourselves. Our goal is to make it happen by the end of 2009.

Check back tomorrow!

Daniel

>> Monday, September 28, 2009

The workout I did this morning was called "Daniel"- a fallen war hero who was killed in action on June 8th, 2006. Whenever you do these workouts, how can you not give it all you got? I mean, I just keep telling myself, "Do it for Daniel." It's so moving to push yourself to the limits in memory of someone... it's one of the coolest things I think CrossFit does.

"Daniel" calls for (at least my scaled version):
25 pull-ups
Run 1/4 mile
21 Thrusters, 45#
Run 1/2 mile
21 Thrusters, 45#
Run 1/4 mile
25 pull-ups

My time = 23:35

It was sooo hard but sooo awesome! I love the looks I get when I do workouts like these. The squat rack (what I use to do pull-ups and also the thrusters) is at the opposite side of the gym as the treadmills. The squat rack is in the area where all the tough guys stand around (notice I didn't say workout, anyway...) and they just stare at me as I run from one to the other.

There's a few guys who are really cool and always talk with everyone- I swear, they do more talking than working out, but they admit that themselves. :) They will say, "Go Kelsa, Go" or "Run girl!" stuff like that. It's very motivating.

Then I'm done and they say things like, "Done already?" in a joking way. Very funny!

This morning I'm listening to Friday's podcast of the Dave Ramsey radio show. Every Friday they call it "Debt Free Fridays" where people call in and scream and tell their story about how they got into debt and why they decided to get out of it. I can't believe that in 2 days, that's going to be us! (No, we're not calling the show...) In 2 days, our only debt will be on our home in Michigan!

I've already called and requested my payoff amount for Wednesday and it totals $1,080.76. I'll come into work that morning and call and pay it off!

2 days left!
2 days left!
2 days left!
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

Until tomorrow,

>> Friday, September 25, 2009

Man, I guess my passive aggressiveness in my last post really paid off. I woke up this morning to 3 comments on my blog! Yippy! I really wasn't concerned, just pointing out the fact that everyone seems busier right now than normal. It's just that time of year or something.

Lexi is planning a move.
Jess has family visiting.
Teacherwoman is in Vegas (I'm jealous)
Jen's a weekend blogger b/c I mean, who has time to blog AND train for the Ironman?

See what I mean? Everyone's got things keeping them busy.

Not me. I'm just chilaxin' trying to recover from my cold this past weekend, keeping busy at work. Not a whole lot to blog about!

I did decide to skip my workout this morning. My calves are way too sore from my jump roping two days ago and my core is sore from yesterday's workout. I was on the road all day yesterday performing audits for work, so I spent the whole day walking around in heels. That definitely did not help the calf situation at all.

I'm really looking forward to doing Daniel though so I plan to make it up this weekend sometime.

One exciting thing----

IN 5 DAYS, WE WILL BE DEBT FREE
(except the house)!
That's exciting right?
Okay, back to work I go. TGIF!

Where have I been?

Where are all my blog readers at? I haven't had comments in a while... everyone is so busy! It's okay, I understand... I haven't been keeping as current on my blog reading as normal either. I'm also noticing that others haven't been updating their own blogs as regularly. I guess we're all busy living life...

On Wednesday, it was my technical day and I really wanted to work on Double Unders with the jump rope. Just an FYI, that's when you jump once but the rope goes under you twice. In case you've forgotten since you were 8 years old! lol

Double unders have been a CONSTANT battle for me. I headed to the gym with jump rope in tow and told myself I wasn't leaving until I did 50 of them.

Completing 15 took me almost 20 minutes! Yeah, like I said, I suck at them! I had WELTS on my shins from the jump rope hitting--- my feet landed before the jump rope went full circle obviously.

Ugh. But I kept going. Slowly.

I did the next 15 faster and my success rate was getting better. Instead of getting one right 1 in every 10, it was more like 1 in every 3! JAM!

Then, something clicked. I struggled through 35 double unders and FINALLY something was clicking. The next 5 were quick and after each double under, I was able to get some additional hops in with the rope. That was a definite improvement because before this, I'd do a double under and not be able to do anything afterwards.

So I was at 40--- only 10 more to go! That's when I really pulled it out of my ass... I ended up doing 5 double unders CONSECUTIVELY... i.e. WITHOUT STOPPING! Crazy! Big improvement! I was getting a rhythm and figuring it out and it felt like I had really triumphed. I ended on a positive note with two rounds of 5 consecutive double unders!

This was yesterday. I cannot even begin to tell you how sore my calves are today! OH MY! I had not anticipated this!

This morning I did:
5 rounds
30 sit-ups
25 back extensions

I've done this two other times and my time before was 11:30. Oddly enough, I was thinking when heading to the gym that it was 11:10 so I was disappointed when I thought I had TIED my previous two times.

It's just now that I'm realizing I actually took 20 seconds off! WAHOO!

Okay, I'm tired so I need to go to bed. Peace out homies!

Drippity

>> Tuesday, September 22, 2009

As the day went on yesterday, I was feeling better and better. Normally, when I'm sick, as the day drags out, I feel worse but I can honestly say that this cold was quite mild. I think it's because it hit over the weekend so I didn't have any hesitation to just sleep, sleep, and sleep some more.

Today I headed to the gym and did my Tuesday workout as planned.
3 rounds:
10 pull-ups
10 handstand push-ups

For one reason or another (maybe still recovering slightly), I could only do 3 pull-ups at a time. Normally I can do 6 before jumping down and starting again. I just didn't have the umph today I guess.

For the HSPush-ups, I did them on the 6th level on the Smith Machine.

My time = 6:08

From there, I did two different exercises- both to work on my grip strength and core strength. It was AMAZING! I loved it and realized I need to do them more b/c I couldn't do a full minute.

The first was the "L sit"- but I prefer to call it the pike. You hang from the bar and put your legs in a pike position- legs straight, bent at the hip until parallel to the floor, and you just hang there... for one minute. Or, if you're me, I had to do 3 20-second sections b/c that's the most I could do. Then I did the same in the "tuck" position so instead of legs straight, your knees are bent. Again, I could only do 20 seconds at a time.

My core was SO ENGAGED! It was super tough!

Give it a try sometime. It's awesome!

Oh, I almost forgot to talk about why the title of my blog post is "drippity"... that's because everytime I'd do a handstand push-up, my nose would drip snot out of it. Obviously, I'm draining from my congestion but it was pretty nasty. Hilarious. But gross.
Until tomorrow,

Taking it easy and Baby Step 3

>> Sunday, September 20, 2009

We were hanging out with some friends on Friday night when I thought I was having an allergy attack. My nose was stuffed up, eyes itchy, throat scratchy... I took some allergy medicine hoping I'd be better soon. But I wasn't.

I woke up on Saturday morning feel more congested and decided I'm offiically sick. Bummer.

I updated my sidebar to include my workouts for the week. Obviously Monday and Tuesday will depend a lot on how I'm feeling each day with this cold. I may opt to just walk on the treadmill and take it easy.

I thought I'd talk a bit about the next step of our Total Money Makeover- our Emergency Fund. As you can see, our goal is to have $13,000 in savings for emergencies. Here's how we came up with that number:

Photobucket

Above is a list of our expenses each month. As you can see, we get $1,100 from our tenants for rent so our total expenses each month are $2,685.29. However, in an emergency, what if they don't pay rent? What if they move out and we're stuck paying for our mortgage? That's why you see the $1,100 added back in later. You also see me adding "COBRA" in... if I were to lose my job, Michael and I would have to pay $500 for COBRA since our health insurance is through my work.

The total monthly expenses then is $4,285.29. We feel comfortable with 3 months worth of expenses in our emergency fund. Everyone is different- some people don't feel comfortable with 3 months and want more. Dave Ramsey calls this your "security gland." Everyone is different.

3 months works for us because I know that each of us makes enough to cover our monthly expenses should 1 of us lose a job. We would both have to lose our jobs for our emergency fund to come into play and we are both very secure with our jobs.

Our goal is to have $13,000 (3 months worth of expenses) in our Emergency Fund by the end of the year.

We're marking 2010 as the year we start paying ourselves and stop paying others.

I'm an idiot and what a difference 3.5 months makes

>> Friday, September 18, 2009

I was so excited to blog this morning on today's workout. Today, I did "Barbara" or actually "Barbara Lite" which is one of the scaled versions of Barbara.

Here's what my workout looked like:
5 rounds of:
10 pull-ups
20 push-ups
30 sit-ups
40 squats

In other words, it took me 24:36 to complete 50 pull-ups, 100 push-ups, 150 sit-ups, and 200 squats! Under 5 minutes per round!

I was pretty pumped about how I did and could not wait to blog about it! I come into work and visit the CrossFit website to see how my time compares to other people's and I read the following:

"Rest approximately 3 minutes in between rounds."

OOPS! BIG OOPS!

I did not rest. I did not stop between rounds. I just kept hauling ass. Hahaha. I made this workout MUCH harder than it needed to be!

But, I still finished and I'm still proud of my time even if I am an idiot who needs to get better at reading instructions.

Even AWESOMER than my time is how much better I did today than when I attempted this workout 3.5 months ago.

On May 26th, I attempted "Barbie" which is a step lower (easier) on the scale than the workout I did today "Barbara Lite".

If you can recall from way back when, I did not actually complete the workout on May 26th. I made it through 3 rounds and then quit b/c I was so frustrated (finished 15 pull-ups only). I had just learned how to do pull-ups and thought I could do 5 rounds of 5 pull-ups. When I tried it though, I found I couldn't do it... I was still not strong enough at pull-ups. I failed and walked away from the pull-up bar pissed off and kicking things (as you can tell, one of my finer moments indeed)...

So in 3.5 months, I went from not being able to complete "Barbie" (5 rounds of only 5 pull-ups) to killing "Barbara Lite" (5 rounds of 10 pull-ups)!

It is so rewarding to see improvements like these when you feel like you're not getting stronger or faster. I really needed this! I needed this small reminder to keep doing what I'm doing because it is working...

Today's workout was super hard. The WOD I did called for 5 sets of 3 push jerks.

My weights were 70,75,80,90,95

Originally I was thinking I'd end up at 90 but as I was doing the lift, I remembered how I really want to push myself to get stronger and get out of any plateau I may be in, so I skipped 85 pounds and ended up finishing at 95.

It was tough, but I felt really good about it! On May 6th, my ONE rep max for the push jerk was 90 pounds but this morning I did 95 pounds 3 TIMES! Pretty cool!

Technically, I could have been done after doing the push jerks, but I want to push myself so I added a CrossFit Endurance workout after the CrossFit workout. The run was just 1 mile which is normally pretty easy but this time it was at a 7% incline on the treadmill.

To be completely honest, it was much harder than I anticipated.

Holy hell. It was tough. Imagine running 1 mile all up hill... I stopped after every 1/4 mile and took a 30 second breather before going again. It ended up taking around 13 minutes which I'm happy with. I really didn't care about my time, just that I did the workout.

After these two workouts, I could not stop sweating. You want to hear about this, I know you do :) Even after I had taken a shower and I was getting ready, I was still sweating. My body was having a tough time cooling itself down- I guess that's a sign that I kicked butt ???

This week I feel really good about my workouts. I've pushed myself a little further with each one than I had beforehand so I feel like maybe I'm getting out of my workout rut! Or maybe it's just that my stress level is much lower now with work so I'm generally more positive and easy-going. Or maybe it's because I'm back to biking to work which is a wonderful stress reliever for me and is very enjoyable.

Or maybe it's all of the above.

Until tomorrow,
Kelsalynn

A payment without the payoff!

>> Wednesday, September 16, 2009

I sent another payment into our POS student loan today for a small $250. Our total amount remaining is $1,077.56.

Unfortunately, the $250 payment doesn't move our % paid off at all- we're still at 98%. That means I don't get to adjust my debt payoff bar at all!

HUGE BUMMER!

I guess that's okay because on September 30th, I will be sending them the final payoff amount and say good-bye to them forever. Until then, I will just have to be content with my 98%!

In preparation for the next step in our Total Money Makeover (building our emergency fund), I created a new tracker on my sidebar! Woot! We will begin that phase on September 30th-- not only will we be paying $1,077.56 (plus some small interest) to pay off our debt completely, but we will also be adding some money to our Emergency Fund! I'll provide more details when it gets closer on how I came up with our goal amount, our timeline, etc.

A purpose for the Smith Machine

There's a lot of machines at the gym that I hate seeing people use, mostly because they do very little for your overall fitness level. Sure, they work a particular muscle, but a lot of them ONLY work THAT muscle and nothing else.

A squat, for example, when done holding a bar on your shoulders (no other support) requires significant effort from all of the stabilizing muscles, not just your quads or your butt. However, a squat done on the SMITH MACHINE (see pic below) requires very few stabilizing muscles to actually work because the bar is held in place for you.

The Smith Machine is probably the machine that I like the least...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Today, however, I actually found a purpose for it!

My workout today was called "Diane".
21-15-9 reps of:
135# deadlift
Handstand push-ups

I did this workout once before on 5/16. I kept the weight the same on the deadlifts- still extremely tough for me! I did 5-6 reps at a time until I got to the required number of reps for that round.

But, I found a new way to do the handstand push-ups. Before, I did them with my feet on a bench, which isn't all that difficult anymore. I can almost do a handstand push-up on my own but not quite so I need a middle ground between the two. I raised the bar on the SMITH MACHINE and put my feet on that, stuck my butt in the air, and did my push-ups. It was much more challenging than with my feet on the bench (more of an incline so more weight to push-up) so I'm excited to get stronger at the handstand push-ups.

My time? 9:02! I beat my last time of 9:17 by 15 seconds!

Until tomorrow,
Kelsalynn

What? Is this even possible?

>> Tuesday, September 15, 2009

You've all heard me say a gazillion times how much I love Mint.com. And I do. I absolutely love it, especially the budgeting section and expense tracker. These are by far the tools I use the most.

There's one tool that I never look at- it's the "Net Income" section. Where the "Expense Tracker" section lists each expense and each check individually so you can categorize it, the "Net Income" is just the total by month of all your income less expenses.

Income - Expenses = Net Income

Sounds helpful right?

Well, would someone please tell me how this is possible-

Photobucket

Mint says that since April, we've made $45,116 and we've spent $53,651.

It says that in the past 6 months, we've spent approximately $8,500 OVER what we made.

Since we don't use credit cards, don't use debt, and our debt has even decreased drastically, how exactly can we be spending more than we make? Where is this "spending" going? How's it being covered?

Obviously, it's wrong. We're not spending more than we make. If it were close, I could maybe understand, but it's not even close... it says in 6 months, we spent $8,500 MORE than we made. In other words, Mint.com thinks we spend $1,400 MORE EACH MONTH than we're bringing home and that's just not possible. I don't know if their income number is off or their expense number and frankly, I don't care. I know our spending is in line with our income so I'm not worried about it.

My Version of a WOD

This morning I did the planned WOD (see sidebar).

Prescribed was:
4 rounds-
100ft lunges w/ 2-30lb dumbbells
30 box jumps
20 weighted pull-ups (30lbs)

I can't do weighted pull-ups and I've really wanted to practice my strict pull-ups (without kipping), so here's what I did:
3 rounds-
100ft lunges w/ 2-15lb dumbbells
20 box jumps
10 strict pull-ups

Total time = 19:37

The pull-ups were by far the hardest part. The lunges, well, I felt like I could have done those all day. The box jumps were tough right after the lunges but after a while, my body adjusted and I did fine.

A "strict" pull-up is probably what you imagine when someone says a "pull-up." I can really only do the kipping kind where I use my body's momentum with a strict one here and there just to practice.

If I had done kipping pull-ups during today's WOD, I probably would have had a time around 10 or 11 minutes. It took me that long to do the strict pull-ups. I can only do one at a time, jump down, shake my arms, then do one more, repeat. And I have to confess that the last set of 10 was half kipping/half strict. I wouldn't say they were kipping pull-ups, but I had to swing my body a little or I wouldn't have been able to do them. Overall, I'm happy with it because I did more than I've ever done before and this is the only way to get better at them.

Until tomorrow,

Workouts

>> Sunday, September 13, 2009

Since I barely worked out this past week due to my job being completely ape shit crazy, I'm officially one week behind on the CrossFit workouts.

I'm going to take advantage of this and begin planning my workouts for the coming week. Normally you don't know what the WOD is until the night before, so it makes planning a little difficult. Since I am now back to biking to work, planning is critical.

Every Sunday I'll post my intended workouts for the week on my sidebar- you can see them there now.

I'm still not entirely sure how Tuesday is going to work. I am volunteering at a golf tournament and I have to be there at 6:30 AM. I am hoping I'll get done a little earlier in the day but I'm not sure and won't really know until that day. It may end up being a bust, we'll just have to see.

"I don't have any debt"... Really? Are you sure about that?

>> Saturday, September 12, 2009

Last night, Michael and I headed over to a co-worker's house to play some Texas Hold 'em. It's been a long time since we've played so I was pretty excited. We had 11 people play one $20 game so we were able to pay out 4 places- $100, $60, $40, and $20.

It cost Michael and I $40 to play and I did not have it budgeted. I forgot. We got lucky though because we sold a DVD player earlier in the day and got $40 for it. Whew. Close one!

Wouldn't you know, I ended up taking 2nd place and Michael took 3rd so we walked away with $100! It was a fun night!

Today we're heading to a Diamondback's baseball game- Michael's boss gave him tickets so it won't cost us anything to go. Then tomorrow we're heading to BDub's to watch football with a bunch of friends, so we'll use a little bit of money for food while we're there.

Pretty fun weekend for very little money! I'm always amazed at how little you have to spend to have fun.

On a different note, I was talking with a friend this morning and the conversation was a little frustrating to me. This whole "Dave Ramsey plan" that Michael and I are on works for us and it makes total sense for our situation. Not having any debt is the way we have chosen to live our lives. However, I fully understand that it's not for everyone and maybe it doesn't make sense for others. I'm cool with that and we all need to work our money the way that works for us, not someone else.

So, when I'm talking to my friend and she tells me she has a new car that she financed ($22K) and $250K in student loan debt, I don't say anything. Sure, I think it's risky, but she's going to be a doctor soon so I know she'll have a large income and I know that's what she's looking at. It's none of my business if she chooses to take on the risk of debt and I do not judge her. Nor do I try to convince her her way is "wrong" because I don't necessarily think I can make that call for her.

I can only honestly and realistically say that debt is "wrong" for Michael and me.

So when she tells me she has $22K in a car and $250K in student loans, I sit back and secretly hope that she never suffers from job loss or any other hardship that would make her regret it. But that's as far as I go with my opinions.

However, when she says in another sentence, "I don't have any debt" I do not feel comfortable not saying something.

Me: "Well, you have a car loan and student loans."

Friend: "Yeah, but I don't have any debt."

Me: "Umm... yes you do. Student loans and a car loan ARE debt. Sure, they're very normal and most people have them and can easily justify them, but they are debt nonetheless."

Friend: "I don't consider that bad though so I don't really think I have debt."

Okay, whether you consider it "bad", "good", or "okay" is irrelevant. I totally understand that student loans are considered "good" debt. I get it. I really do. However, good or bad, debt is debt. Don't be unrealistic and say something like, "I don't have debt"

That's denial. Go ahead, have it, I really don't care. We choose not to but if you want to, go right ahead.

But don't go and say that you don't have any debt when you do.

...

...The title of this post pretty much sums it up.

Sorry I've been MIA. Work is crazy. Hopefully it will calm the F down soon so I can get on with my normal routine of working out (what's that?) and budgeting obsessively.

We still have a debt free date of September 30th! Wahoo!

Also, please never forget.

Until then,

Tough workout-

Run 1/4 mile (approx 2:07 or 7.5 mph on thrill mill)
25 burpees
Run 1/4 mile
25 burpees
Bike for 2:10
25 burpees
Run 1/4 mile
25 burpees
Run 1/4 mile
25 burpees
Bike 2:10
25 burpees

Total = 1.0 miles running/sprinting, 4 minutes biking, and 150 burpees = 31:22!

The burpees were with jumps at the end...after about 100 of them, I swear I was jumping with all my might but probably not coming two inches off the ground.

Today feels like a Monday... I'm going to have to remind myself all day that it's not Monday.

Here's a picture I found on failblog (a website I absolutely love!)...

Even though I'm fatigued, I'd still take the stairs in the pic above...

CMU didn't win, but we only lost by 13 points. My bet over lunch was that CMU would lose by 16 points or more so I actually won! Wahoo! I would have preferred bragging rights AKA the win, but ah well... Lunch will be just as good.

Until tomorrow,

Heading to Tucson tonight with some friends for the CMU/ U of A football game. Michael and I both graduated from Central Michigan University, along with most of our friends. And wouldn't you know that they're traveling 2,000 miles to play the University of Arizona tonight! Of course, we rounded up the troops, got some tix and a hotel room, and plan to have a good time!

I just so happen to work with two guys who went to the UofA so we've been talking smack back and forth all week. Here's what I did to their work space:

Now I just hope we win! =] We are not expected to win so we'll see what happens.

overcoming a plateau

>> Thursday, September 3, 2009

I haven't really blogged about it, but lately I've been thinking a lot about my workouts. When I think about where I was when I started doing CrossFit, I'm definitely much stronger now. I'm a heck of a lot more fit than I ever thought possible.

Within the first 6 months, I saw huge improvements- in my speed, my strength, and my performance. After a while tough, those improvements start to dwindle... I may improve, but not as drastically as when I first started. I guess this is considered the typical workout plateau.

Yesterday when I did the cleans and dips workout, I didn't finish feeling satisifed, it was "just okay." Sure, I beat my time from the first go 'round at the same workout, so I guess I improved, but something was just off. Despite beating my time, I didn't have a sense of accomplishment at all.

It wasn't hard enough. I don't dare say it was easy, but...

I think it's time to increase the weights I use during the workouts. While it may take me longer to do the workout, who really cares. If I want to keep seeing drastic changes, I need to keep challenging myself and taking it up a notch.

This morning, I did just that.

The WOD called for:
5 rounds-
10 reps Hang Power Snatch
1/4 mile sprint

The actual WOD called for 95# HPS which I cannot do. My one rep max is only 70 pounds!

CrossFit provides different scaled versions of each workout if you can't perform it as they prescribe...
35-45 pounds was one of the scales
the next hardest was 75 pounds

If I think I'm in between two scales, instead of trying to stick to their categories, I'm just going to do whatever weight I think will make the workout hard for me... forgetting the scales if necessary.

Since I knew I couldn't do 75 pounds, I normally would have done the 45# scale. Having my new perspective, however, I decided to make my own scale and do 55#... (10# more than called for and 15# less than my one rep max). I knew it'd be tough, but I was ready for it.

I ended up doing 50 HPS at 55# and 1.25 mile sprint (8.0 mph on thrill mill).

My time was 22:14.

I felt so awesome afterwards. I was on cloud nine for sure. It was just what I needed. It was hella tough but I felt like I was pushing myself with the weight and really strengthening my muscles.

I'm looking forward to the next 6 months!

Did you guys see my debt payoff bar???? Holy shit right? There's only a teensy bit of white left! That white represents only $1,324.99!

AMT REMAINING = $1,324.99!
Eeeeek!

Until tomorrow,

Elizabeth & Debt

>> Tuesday, September 1, 2009

I headed to the gym this morning and did Elizabeth:
21-15-9 reps
55# clean
42-30-18 reps
tricep dipson the bench

I can't do ring dips, so the substitute is 2x the number of reps in dips on a bench so that's what I did. The last time I did this was April 30th and my time was 9:24. I blogged about how I could only get through 3 cleans at a time toward the end because I was so exhausted.

This time around- my time was 6:48!!! Huge improvement! I got a lot faster and I was able to do the last set of 9 cleans without setting the weight down. It's definitely time to up the weights on this workout. How exciting!

Here's a video I found on youtube of a CrossFit gym doing Elizabeth:

Onto debt--- big day today! I sent a whopping $2,150 to my last POS loan! Oh man, the month of September could not go by fast enough.

AMT REMAINING = $2,537.99

PAID OFF = 96%!!

TOTAL AMT PAID = $58,414.76

Until tomorrow,

Quick WOD & September Budget

The WOD called for weighted pull-ups, which I cannot do. I'm still stoked about being able to do kipping pull-ups and I can honestly say, have not even considered doing a weighted pull-up before.

Instead of weighted pull-ups, I tried to do as many srict pull-ups as possible AKA no kipping. Without the kip, you don't have any momentum, so obviously they're more difficult.

I could only do 2 at a time but I did 6 rounds of 2 and then my very last round I did 3 reps! Total = 15

Not bad I suppose. Quick day at the gym... I walked in, worked out, showered, then left and some people were working out the whole time. I always feel a little goofy when that happens, but oh well.

Work is really stressful right now. So much so in fact that last night I kept dreaming about it- I kept dreaming I wasn't going to get all my work done (which very well may be reality) and I was disappointing people. It's not hard to know where these dreams are coming from- my own personal paranoia that I can't get everything done that's on my plate. I always manage to find a way so I'm hoping that happens this week too!

Our budget for September is crucial if we're going to be debt free by the end of it. We have a trip planned this coming weekend and our 4-year wedding anniversary on September 30th. And yes, before anyone asks, our budget for our anniversary is only $50 and yes, that includes a small gift for each other. We don't expect people to understand, but we both want to be out of debt like you would not believe. If we can do it on September 30th AKA our anniversary, that will be a better gift to each other than anything.

Here's our budget for September:

This weekend, our college (Central Michigan University) plays University of Arizona an hour south of where we live so of course we're going to the game! I mean, how often does a school in Michigan play one in Arizona??? We got fabulous seats, a hotel room, and we're heading down for the night with a group of friends. It should be fun!

With total income during September of over $8K, we're hoping to send $4,685 to our debt, which is our remaining balance.

1 month and counting... thanks for coming along for the ride!

Kelsalynn

***Update- Car Insurance budget is actually $95 for September, not $62. Don't ask me why. I just went online to go pay it and they said I actually owe $33 more. ??? I hate how State Farm does that shit. The bill I got in the mail was different. Whatever. Total budget = $3,056.42
